Common Fears About Pursuing Your Dream Career

College, Career, Life Career and life planning sources for college students, latest grads, and profession-changers. Primary Menu Common Fears about Pursuing Your Dream Career Andrea Why do individuals pursue certain careers? I suspect that many select their careers as a result of they're familiar and protected. Maybe they grew up in an area the place there weren’t a lot of career options, so they chose something they knew. They are held back from pursuing careers that curiosity them because they have fears, a few of that are very reliable and some that are not. Some widespread fears that hold us again when selecting a career: 1. Being judged by associates, household, and society . If I stop my job/change my major, what will individuals think? This is what I thought several years ago when I was pursuing a profession that I knew wasn’t proper for me. I was apprehensive about seeming flaky and worried about what different folks would think. Changing from a seemingly interesting and secure profession path would seem loopy. I was apprehensive completely too much about what different individuals thought and not sufficient about my own future happiness. Peo ple change careers all of the time and lots of school college students change majors a number of instances. Stop worrying so much about being “normal” or following a conventional career path. Often, judgmental people have many regrets themselves and are jealous that you have the courage to make a change or do one thing unfamiliar. 2. Not discovering a job in your chosen area . I admit that it is a legitimate concern because demand is declining rapidly for some careers and different jobs have only a few openings. If job safety is something you worth extremely in a profession, you shouldn’t pursue certainly one of these careers. However, don’t let demand be the only real standards in choosing a profession. Research careers and how many openings there are annually. Also, how long and rigorous is the training? Jobs that require an expert diploma might need a small number of openings per 12 months, however additionally they have a smaller number of certified candidates per place. Talk to individuals working in the areas that curiosity you and see if they're confident about demand and growth. If you might be prepared to move the place the roles are concentrated and choose a subject with rising demand, likelihood is yow will discover employment in your chosen field. 3. Not making enough cash to live comfortably. This is another reliable concern. You need to be sensible when selecting a profession. Decide what the minimum quantity of take-house pay you need for fundamentals, financial savings and a few extras you really get pleasure from. You must also have enough to repay debt and have some left for emergencies. Making a modest wage in a job you like will in all probability be worth giving up some luxuries. Also, having a high paying job may not be worth the trade-offs: poor health, stress, and lack of private time. Some hyperlinks to assist with your research : What should you decide that your dream career isn’t practical? Find the subsequent finest profes sion based on your abilities, pursuits, personality and values. Take profession checks and search for careers which are always near the highest. Talk to people currently in these careers and do some job shadowing. You dream profession would possibly make a great aspect earnings and you might even be capable of pursue it full-time someday. four. Failure . Fear of failure should never maintain you back. Failure means different things to totally different individuals, so redefine what failure means to you. As lengthy as you retain pursuing your goals (and these goals might change over time), you haven’t failed. When you first begin out in a profession, you gained’t have plenty of experience and you might feel overwhelmed. This is widespread, particularly amongst perfectionists who want to be the most effective at every little thing. Feeling incompetent and overwhelmed when you are starting out in a position doesn't imply you’ve failed. In many professions, there is a steep learni ng curve the place the keys to doing well are follow and persistence. Fear may be paralyzing and might prevent us from reaching our goals. Don’t let irrational fears maintain you back and tackle your legitimate issues by conducting in depth analysis. Regrets from not pursuing a profession that’s best for you can last a lifetime. Salary Negotiation Words to Lose and Use

Pay Negotiation Words to Lose and Use I as of late observed Sam Horn, creator of Create the Perfect Pitch, Title, and Tagline for Anything at the NRWA gathering. Sam discussed the intensity of words while introducing thoughts and talked about what she called words to lose and words to utilize. I began pondering the significance of dropping losing words from compensation exchange discussions and supplanting them with winning words to safeguard the relationship the activity searcher has made a decent attempt to work during the meeting and at last land the activity. Most dealings self-destruct in light of the way work searchers request things, not on the grounds that what they are requesting is unreasonable. Consider these words to lose and words to use:replace yet with andI am keen on your vacant position, however the pay is too low.I am keen on your vacant position and I might want to talk about the chance to arrange the pay package. The word yet cuts individuals off while the word and proposes proceeding with the discuss ion to discover resolution.replace you have to with on the off chance that you couldIn request for me to consider this position you should expand the marking bonus. If you could build the marking reward, I would be exceptionally intrigued by your offer. The words you have to recommend a request while on the off chance that you could proposes working cooperatively to discover a solution.replace cant, in light of the fact that with sure, as soon asI cannot acknowledge the ebb and flow offer on the grounds that the measure of stock you are offering is too low.I am anxious to acknowledge the proposal when we arrange certain parts of the bundle, for example, the stock options. The words cant in light of the fact that propose an obstruction while the words when recommend that there is an approach to sidestep the issue with different people help.replace no chance to get with I hopeTheres no chance I can acknowledge this offer given the momentum commission structure.I trust there is space to a rrange the ebb and flow commission structure. The words no chance propose conclusion while the words I trust invite more conversation. What words do you have to lose from your exchange discussions?

5 Top Leadership Articles For The Week Of October 9, 2017

Book Karin & David Today 5 Top Leadership Articles for the Week of October 9, 2017 Each week I learn management articles from varied on-line resources and share them throughout social media. Here are the five leadership articles readers found most precious final week. Click on the title of the article to learn the total text. I even have added my remark about each article and want to hear what you think, too. It doesn’t pay to say to the CFO: These numbers on the P&L aren’t true. And arguing with Walmart or Target about your market share stats doesn’t work both. You can’t make things higher when you can’t agree on the information. Real breakthroughs are generally accompanied by new information, by new metrics, by new ways of measurement. But unless we agree in advance on what’s occurring, it’s tough to perform a lot. My Comment: This morning I spent several hours with an organization that appears to be making good progress toward their goals. They’ve clearly defined what success seems like. They’ve made several essential modifications to help ever yone achieve the desired outcomes. But after I asked them about their progress, they mentioned things like “I suppose so…it really seems prefer it…it looks like we’re making great progress.” “That’s what you suppose or really feel. How have you learnt?” I asked. What does success look like in your staff or organization? How will you understand whenever you’re attaining it? You can’t lead without the solutions to these questions. There’s an old proverb used by many to describe the leader/follower dynamic with respect to worker engagement: “You can lead a horse to water, however you can’t make him drink.” This is a way of saying in the end individuals will solely do what they choose, even should you show them the way. In other words, simply as a horse has to decide on to drink, an employee must select to be engaged. Well, yes and no. Getting the horse to drink is the specified end result, however what occurs up to and through that point will influence his w illingness to do so. My Comment: In conversations with house owners, executives, and senior managers, we often have to clarify that employee engagement isn’t one thing you do. Engagement is a outcome. It’s the results of good leadership, great tradition, objective, development, encouragement, and efficacy. Stop making an attempt to engage individuals and create the environment that produces engagement. Perhaps few things can make your office really feel more insufficient than those annual “Best Places to Work” lists. They listing posh advantages, campuses with dry cleaning providers, and coaching packages that give employees management expertise. How is a smaller firm with a smaller budget imagined to compete? The good news is that there are ways to take cues from what these companies are doing, scale them, then adapt and adopt them in your company… My Comment: I think it’s secure to say that no worker ever engaged with their work or gave extra effort due to a dry-cleani ng service. These types of perks, which are sometimes distinctive to a selected company or environment, are the icing on an excellent cake. Don’t give attention to the icing. First, give attention to baking a superb cake. Then you'll be able to add the perks which are meaningful and available inside your corporation. Moran shares important components from these finest locations to work that you could definitely ensure happen in your organization and team. For example, the primary merchandise on the listing is something every leader can do, whether or not you lead a Fortune 50 enterprise or a three-particular person group: help them develop. Co-worker tensions account for about 80 percent of office difficulties, but luckily, there are lots of easy techniques to make life on the workplace easier. Psychologists have discovered that a menace to a person’s shallowness can fairly actually feel like a menace to survival, so it’s essential to encourage open and optimistic dialogue wit h colleagues to get your point across rather than igniting a flame. Plus, staying in control of your feelings won’t solely enhance your temper at the workplace, but assist you to advance your profession. My Comment: This is a wonderful record to handle a typical downside. I needed to learn many of these techniques by way of trial and error they usually work. People will normally deal with you the way in which you permit them to. If you’re fighting difficult personalities at work, try this infographic and give yourself time (and grace) to practice. One of your greatest team members took on a new problem. Performance plummeted. Now what? My Comment: This is a great take a look at a problem that's incessantly ignored. I’ve even watched executives punish high-performers who took on a brand new problem and, predictably, didn’t perform as nicely while they realized how to grasp their new reality. The factor is, you’ve received to challenge your excessive performers if you would like them to stay round. In our Winning Well confidence-competence model, someone who's confident in their talents and extremely competent at what they do is ready to develop. But that essentially implies that they may move around the model to a place of decrease competence…and possibly decrease confidence too. Rockwell gives you glorious methods to assist your excessive performer in their new problem. What thoughts do these articles recall to mind? Do you see one thing in another way than the creator? Did you've a favorite leadership article this week? Leave us a comment and let’s hear from you. Singled Out - Spark Hire

Singled Out - Spark Hire Two or three weeks back we addressed Yahoo's! new (can't) telecommute strategy. Some of the objections about the strategy originated from housewives or fathers; yet shouldn't something be said about the single people out there? Do swingin' singles merit indistinguishable contemplations from guardians with regards to took care of time or work-from-home? It's my conviction that it is inalienably uncalled for to relegate a to some degree peasant coding to the childless. But then, as the Washington Post expounds, isnt it harder to deny the parent with a small kid telecommute capacities than the youthful, single individual who has a long drive or goes to graduate school classes? Are those reasons as great? All things considered, nobody is expecting anybody to get a propelled degree, and it's a lot simpler for the youthful and allowed to get and draw nearer, isn't that so? HR experts face a troublesome assignment of deciding whom to permit telecommute recompenses, generally choosing whose work-life balance is increasingly significant. The reality of the situation is that the single will probably worry about more concern for an apparent reasoning that they basically have less solid duty outside of work. Is that fundamentally the case? No. There are various reasons somebody without a family may demand telecommute, and not every one of them might be avoidable. At long last, be that as it may, HR administrators will probably need to settle on intense choices So while the new Yahoo! telecommute arrangement might be disagreeable, for HR administrators, it might help wipe out some dilemmas emerging from who gets work-life balance need. It evens the odds, though by removing a benefit for everybody. Is it reasonable? Again perhaps not, however nor is organizing one worker's work-life balance over another's. Give us a yell, HR administrators. Accomplish you give work-like parity and work-from-home to guardians? Would a work-from-home boycott dispose of a portion of these issues? Facebook Networking Sites

Facebook Networking Sites FACEBOOK NETWORKING SITES I admit, at first I thought the idea of Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and other networking sites were, well, silly. It seemed juvenile and strange not to mention an invasion of privacy. Why would anyone put pictures of family members on a site where virtually EVERYONE could look at them? I didnt get it and poo-pooed the idea. Clients begun sending me invites to connect on their different sites and boy, are there a lot of them.. Plaxo, LinkedIn, Fast Pitch, Tagged, and Twitter, just to name a few. Not wanting to seem rude to my clients, I finally broke down and started an account with LinkedIn. I found it to be very professional and a great way to have an online bio that perspective clients and colleagues can read to have a better idea of what it is I do. Finally, after hearing my nieces and nephews talk about Facebook all summer long, I decided to cave and start an account. I did one for business and one for personal. Once I got the hang of it, it was like a giant light went on and suddenly, without warning, I was hooked. The first two weeks I was like a fiend, connecting with old friends and family in my personal accountcatching up on what everyone had been doing, who was having children, where were they working, who had moved, married, etc. I had to keep checking. It was like a drug. Who was doing and posting what? After about a week and a half, the dazzling draw of it started to wear off. Thank goodness. I realized a few things in my networking journey so far: 1) You can control your privacy settings, so only your friends can see what you posted not the whole world. 2) With my business account, it is a fantastic way to see what my colleagues are doing, what articles they find useful, clients or projects they are working on, etc. 3) You dont have to invite EVERYONE in your address book (my first mistake when joining I invited everyone to join me). Invite who want to hear about. 4) Use these sites sparingly at workremember, many companies ban the use of these at work due to loss of productivity and the system resource drain. Your job could be in jeopardy if use them without permission (although, cmon who ever really asks their bosses if they can Facebook while at work?). Save your networking for home. 5) Pick and choose your networking forums. You dont need to join every one. It gets to be too time consuming trying to keep up with more than one or two. I still check my Facebook everyday. Although maybe just one account or the other, and only about twice a day. Who has the time? I am still catching up from the work I missed while on my Facebook high. If you are contemplating joining one of these sites, read my 5 tips first and be ready to enjoy yourself. As a former skeptic, its easy to get hooked. Until next time Erin Kennedy

How to Apply the Self-Improvement Movement to Your Career Success

The most effective method to Apply the Self-Improvement Movement to Your Career Success The most effective method to Apply the Self-Improvement Movement to Your Career Success The personal development class is detonating nowadays. That is uplifting news for the general population, and it's uplifting news for everyone contemplating progressing or exchanging their professions. Why? You don't should be a peruser of Success magazine (or the site's vocation segment) to know the universe of personal development has such a great amount to show us profession development. From business searches and meeting abilities to objective setting and deliberate progression, the hands on applications from this industry/development are unending and there are exercises for everybody. Objective setting We should begin with objectives. The primary thing each self improvement master will let you know is you have to realize where you're going. At that point you have to record it. In this way, decide your current goal(s) for profession achievement. Is it to begin working for Company X? Become familiar with a job in a specific field? Study under a particular kind of expert? Increment your duties (alongside the odds for an advancement)? Whatever the point, record it, at that point inform at any rate 5 others regarding it. The very demonstrations of archiving and sharing your profession objective will assist with setting your determination to accomplish it. On the off chance that you need to go greater with three-, five-and 10-year plans, you can attempt, albeit a few specialists think with the present paces of progress those inaccessible time periods should best be left ambiguous so you can adjust objectives when the world definitely tilts another bearing. The key is to prepare to stun the world and long haul, at that point record the means to arriving. Occupation looking Occupation looking is a 'numbers game.' What do I mean? It's everything about volume. Similarly as a salesman fixates on keeping their pipeline full and working all the leads, you also should go after different positions and conversing with much more individuals as you arrange and possibly shadow good examples at work. Additionally like a sales rep, you can't think about dismissal literally in light of the fact that you realize that a few people are simply not the correct purchaser or simply aren't prepared to purchase. In any case, you accept every dismissal is getting you closer to the correct activity, and you welcome the chance to rehearse your aptitudes (for example aptitudes utilized in the application procedure, talk with introduction, work exploring) en route. Eventually, taking a gander at the pursuit of employment as a numbers game methods you won't harp excessively long on a specific opening. It implies you remove your sense of self from it when a business rejects you since you know it's their misfortune. It implies you have a few alternatives going without a moment's delay, continually setting up the following meeting, conveying the following application, or heading off to the following employment reasonable. Staying aware of normal, pursuit of employment action expands your chances and keeps yourself adjusted if any of them doesn't work out. Talking The old clich 'careful discipline brings about promising results' is well, great, for stressing how to pro prospective employee meetings. You have to sell yourself, and the best deals introduction begins with industrious arrangement. By taking a shot at your 'attempt to sell something' consistently, you sharpen your meeting aptitudes a similar way Jeff Olson of The Slight Edge would suggest: One stage at once, reliably. As time goes on this consistency gathers into a minimum amount of force, what Olson calls 'the edge.' Regardless of whether you don't have a meeting on some random day, you can even now fortify your aptitudes by pretending with a companion or previous associate, rehearsing alone before a mirror, or recording and remembering your most appropriate responses to basic inquiries (e.g., Describe one of your shortcomings, Tell me how you reacted to probably the greatest test, Tell me about yourself).Continuous improvement is the situation here. A frequently overlooked piece of meeting is that it gives a chance to you the possibility to disapprove of a business. Such a large number of us dread dismissal going into the procedure, imagining that the assessment is only single direction; recollect, it's a two-way road! Dismissing an inappropriate organization is as significant as finding the correct one, and there's capacity in holding the 'dismissal' card. Indeed, when you decide an organization isn't an ideal choice for you during the fundamental recruiting stages, it's your commitment to dismiss it. You deserve it. On the main date that is a prospective employee meet-up, you reserve each option to leave a short time later with no commitment on the off chance that you don't care for what you see. This is additionally an expertise: Identifying an ideal choice for your gifts and on the other hand, staying away from the terrible fits. Intentional progression What self improvement mentors perpetually lecture is the intensity of being all around read. Being all around read gives you a more grounded life (and quicker knowledge), which additionally applies legitimately to your vocation. In the case of developing a perusing propensity implies staying aware of industry news/assessments, world occasions, or exchange distributions, or letting your creative mind meander with books or subjects you customarily wouldn't experience in your work life, the objective is to peruse every now and again. A consistent eating routine of perusing widens your point of view, gives you an increasingly advanced world view, and keeps your brain sharp by permitting you to get at the core of what makes a difference to your manager and the individuals you serve. It's difficult to think about a superior selling point for someone needing to progress in their present association or general proficient job. Having good thoughts and being shrewd in your capacity to consider new ideas frequently begins with being an insatiable peruser and self-teacher. Also, the better you instruct yourself by taking care of your brain helpful data, the more you increase the value of each venture you attempt, bunch you join or meeting you join in. Make little strides, not huge jumps To obtain again from The Slight Edge (or Darren Hardy's The Compound Effect, which conveys a comparable message), I'd contend gaining day by day steady ground in your vocation plans is far more significant than any enormous particular discovery. Following this rationale, you need to look to the future while progressively developing yourself consistently approaching slowly and carefully to carry you closer to your present profession objective, whatever it is. I'll leave you with this: A familiar axiom lets us know, The excursion of a thousand miles starts with a solitary advance. What's your initial step to profession achievement? Analysing Different Personality Types in the Hiring Process

Analysing Different Personality Types in the Hiring Process Hiring managers aren’t always as good at identifying high potential as they think they are. A range of techniques seek to address this problem, but which is the most appropriate? The problem with intuition For any candidate, a good first impression is essential. But to what degree should a line manager trust their instinct on a potential hire? Turning down a candidate despite their obvious ability, could be considered egotistical or short-sighted, especially when others in the organisation aren’t asked for input. Businesses are increasingly recognising that it’s inappropriate for a single line manager to act as a gatekeeper to a business.   If talent is allowed to fall through the cracks at this early stage in the screening process, companies will continually miss huge opportunities. CVs offer a helpful window into a candidate’s immediate ambitions. However, they do not necessarily provide an accurate representation of a persons character.   Often identifying an individual’s potential within a workplace comes from understanding the motivations of existing staff, and hiring to match the ambitions of high achievers with a similar profile within the talent pool. Supporting new hires with people analytics If you haven’t heard of people analytics before, perhaps now’s the time to take note. The term broadly refers to companies’ use of data to better understand the potential of employees and candidates. With knowledge of individuals’ personality types, performance metrics and ambitions for the future, a company can more effectively place and grow them within their role. Ultimately, this helps keep employees engaged, reduce attrition and develop high-performing individuals within the business. By collecting data on individuals personalities, businesses can save time and money at the early stage of the hiring process. Initial screening of individuals’ attitudes and abilities can ensure that individuals meet requirements of a business’ culture, diversity quota, and can help predict their initial performance in the role. Without this information, businesses are more likely to mis-hire individuals, or passively take on candidates which suit the company’s short-term goals; all without considering their long-term role in the company. Quantitative or qualitative? Yet regardless of data’s ability to predict, measure and identify talent, more qualitative approaches to HR remain common, and for good reason. Lived experience is something we all share and relate to meaningfully, rather than numerical representations of ability. A hiring manager’s impression of a candidate’s personality may well be the best judge of an individual’s cultural fit within an organisation and an interview is often the most appropriate method of determining their competence. However, each organisation’s HR department comes unstuck at some stage, whether that’s attrition, a lack of skills or flagging motivation. Rather than replace the hiring manager, data equips them with the information required to address these flaws. After the contract is signed Increasingly, statistical tests are able to demonstrate candidates more complex characteristics, such as their attitude to teamwork, determination and level of creativity. Rather than simply identify whether a candidate is an appropriate fit for a role, these measures can identify how they will perform within the first months of their appointment, as well as the support they need to settle into their role. Soon the use of people analytics and other data-driven techniques will simply become a part of due diligence and an integral part of traditional recruitment techniques. Data will increasingly be used to send more fit candidates to pre-screening interviews, reducing the chance of a bad hire and helping companies support their employees’ growth within the business. About the author: James Grant  founded Weavee  in 2015 after identifying how businesses struggled to recognise high-potential talent in candidates and their own workforce. Weavee blends big data analysis with psychometric methods to provide businesses with the information they need to hire and grow individuals in line with their objectives.

Workplace diversity is here, but its not what we expected

Workplace diversity is here, but its not what we expected There is plenty of data to show that diversity is good for the workplace. But in general we dont really create it for ourselves, because we like to work with people who are similar to us. In terms of innovation, diverse teams way outperform non-diverse teams, but people are very comfortable working with people they have worked with in the past or people who are like them, says Frans Johansson, author of Medici Effect: What Elephants and Epidemics Can Teach Us About Innovation. Before you start commenting about how you are the exception, and your office is diverse, lets be clear on what diversity is. The research about diversity at work is about diversity of experience, perspectives or work styles. This means that teams you might assume are diverse may not be for example a multi-racial team of prep-school and Ivy-league graduates might have had a homogenous experience. This also means that places we typically think of as diverse, like San Francisco, are actually more homogenous than we realize (#6). Diversity is a popular idea, but we misuse the idea of it all the time. We can learn a lot about diversity from preschools, by way of politics. Wisconsin recently voted to ban gay marriage. Voters of Madison, where I live, strongly opposed this measure. The sentiment here is indignanation that their own state passed such a discriminatory law. Yet gay marriage is not about diversity in Madison. Gay people are part of the mainstream here, and are widely accepted. A better gauge of Madisons ability to accept diversity is whether their school system is willing to spend the money to comply with the Individuals with Disabilities Act at the preschool level. And the answer is a resounding no. The school system violates case law precedents and no one is standing up for the kids who are different and demanding that they receive fair treatment under the law. Another preschool example: New York City preschools cost more than $10,000 a year. Most offer no financial aid, and on top of that, the admissions process is so difficult and grueling that many parents hire consultants to help get their kid in. (I hired a very popular one for $4000.) Almost all the schools talk about the importance of diversity, but how you can have diversity among people who will pay $10,000 a year for preschool? You have already eliminated 99% of the U.S. population. Do you know where there are truly diverse preschools? In Head Start, where kids come to school speaking no English, where some kids have parents with Ph.Ds, and some have parents who cant read. And you know what? These classrooms are very, very difficult to manage, because diversity is very difficult to manage. And this brings me back to Johansson, who says that truly diverse teams are not easy. Making diversity work requires a lot of effort up front. So you wont get results as fast as youre used to. People must know this instinctively because we talk about diversity all the time, and create it only rarely. People talk about it because they know they should, says Johansson, But they just dont believe it. So what can you do to change things? 1. Understand that we each have an inherent bias against diversity. 2. Test your team for diversity. Did you mesh right away? Then youre probably not coming from such different perspectives. 3. Embrace the multi-generational workplace. The reason generation is such a big issue in the workplace today is that in many instances, it creates diversity that you cant escape. Usually you can decide to not to work with the person who would bring diversity to your team. You dont need to give a reason, you just choose someone who is more like you. But what do you do when a whole generation is not like you? You have to learn to work with someone who has different pespectives. So, the bad news is that weve been talking about diversity for twenty years, and accomplishing very little. The good news is that the fireworks at the multigenerational workplace are not just conflict, but the first signs of widespread diversity at work.

How to Make Your LinkedIn Stand Out - Career Sidekick

How to Make Your LinkedIn Stand Out - Career Sidekick How to Make Your LinkedIn Stand Out LinkedIn / https://www.edenscott.com/blog Theres a lot of competition on LinkedIn, so if you want to get noticed, you need a few tricks to stand out.In this article Im going to show you how to make your LinkedIn stand out and catch attention from recruiters, hiring managers, and anyone else you want to network with. How To Make Your LinkedIn Profile Stand Out1. Have a great headshotThe first thing you should do to make your LinkedIn profile stand out is have a friend (or professional) help you take a great headshot. You should be clearly visible, smiling, and in a somewhat professional setting (not a dimly-lit party surrounded by beer bottles).Your image on LinkedIn is one of the first things people see in search results, when you make a post, when you comment on other posts, etc.And it can make or break the first impression of you. Also, the worst thing you can do is have no profile photo at all. Many people will assume youre a fake account if you dont have a real photo. So before you do anything else to make your LinkedIn profile stand out, get a great photo set up.2. Make Sure Your Headline Stands Out and is UniqueAlong with your image, your LinkedIn headline is one of the few things people can see BEFORE they click your profile. So its utlra-important if you want to stand out.And theres no rule that says it needs to be your job title. You can get creative and put whatever will you think will attract attention from the people you want to connect with. One word of caution, though: If youre a job seeker, I dont recommend saying Actively seeking positions in your headline. There are better uses for that space. If you need help with your headline, you can find 10 LinkedIn headline examples here.3. Write Your Profile for Your Target AudienceThis is probably my favorite (and most underrated) tip for how to make your LinkedIn profile stand out:Dont think about yourself as you write your LinkedIn. Yes its about you and your work experience. However, its also about the reader. And yo ull get noticed more on LinkedIn if you think about your ideal reader when writing your profile.Picture the person you want to read your profile and notice it. (You can even give them a name, decide how old they are, etc. In marketing this is called creating a customer avatar and is a powerful tactic). Now sit down to write your LinkedIn profile thinking what that person will find exciting, what theyll notice, and what will get THEM to click your profile and contact you after reading it.(Your image and headline are what get people to click, and the LinkedIn profile sections on your actual profile page are what will get them to contact you).Think of your ideal audience when writing ALL of this.4. Make your LinkedIn Skimmable and Easy to ReadUse bullets and other formatting. Avoid large paragraphs with many sentences. Make it as inviting and easy to read as possible. This is one way youll make recruiters and hiring managers want to keep reading (and hopefully contact you) after theyve opened your profile.I recently wrote an article on how to write a LinkedIn summary and there are some great examples in there of how you can even use emojis to grab attention on your LinkedIn profile.5. Get LinkedIn RecommendationsAnother way to make your LinkedIn profile stand out is ask a couple of colleagues to write you a recommendation. You can ask past colleagues, bosses, current coworkers, or anyone else that knows your work!If you want more info on this, I wrote an in-depth article about getting recommendations on your LinkedIn profile and why its so powerful. The short answer is: Very few job seekers do it, so it immediately catches an employers attention and gets them to stop skimming and read it closely!6. Engage and Be Active on LinkedInPart of getting your profile to stand out on LinkedIn is getting seen. Nobody can click your profile if youre not showing up on their screen, right? So no matter how great a profile you write, you also need to be active on the platform to g et seen by more people.Look for relevant groups to join and post in. You can ask questions, answer questions, share articles, and more. Just make sure you read the group rules first. Some group owners are terrified of someone stealing their thunder and posting advice in their group (its a terrible mindset and theyre not going very far in life or business, but thats how some people think). You can also post articles and tips/thoughts on your own feed. You can follow other people, comment on their posts, etc.Every time youre commenting, posting, responding to comments on your own posts, or anything else, your photo and headline are getting seen! And thats a key part of getting clicked and getting messaged once youve written a basic LinkedIn profile that looks good and stands out from other people. It Takes Effort to Make Your LinkedIn Stand OutRecruiters spend a LOT of time on LinkedIn. Looking through hundreds of profiles. And we usually see the same things each day over and over.Like anyone, we get tired, and start to go into autopilot. Our brain is half awake as we scan through a bunch of profiles quickly, looking for one or two keywords. However, when we see a great profile that someone put effort into, it does stand out and grab our attention. We stop skimming and start reading closely. And were more likely to want to talk to you about job opportunities, invite you to interview for a position, or add you to our network. If you follow the tips above, youll make your LinkedIn stand out so you can grow your network faster, get more job interviews, and advance your career faster.

What to Look For in Review Resume Writing Services

What to Look For in Review Resume Writing ServicesBefore you hire a review resume writing service it is important to understand the services they offer. As with any other service you hire, you will need to be aware of the amount of services provided, as well as the quality of services they provide. These services will vary depending on what type of services a review resume writing service is providing you. For example, some services offer free professional critiques that you do not have to pay for. In many cases the reviews are not comprehensive, but it will give you an idea of how effective the writer is and whether or not they were skilled enough to write a positive review. The first step to having your resume read by top executives is to make sure you are well written. Many of the review services offer first person point of view written reviews. This is a good way to get an idea of how good the writer is, and whether or not they understood your situation. If the writer seems to have taken time to understand your situation and write a decent review, you can bet they will be able to write a follow up review to further drive your case. You want to be certain that you are getting an honest opinion from a reviewer. There is no reason to believe a company that does this is going to be biased in favor of your services. On the contrary, they will want to be very clear about their bias towards your services. When looking for a specific example of a review, you can find them in various places. For example, many agencies will provide samples of their services online and at trade shows. Also, you can look for them on message boards. Many service providers will send out a message board posting, asking for feedback, and include links to potential reviews.Look for reviews that have reviews of a large number of services. In some cases, reviews will be inconsistent with one another, which means a single review could be written by multiple people. Even if one review was written b y someone who never read another review, it still shows you the type of service they offer. As far as evaluating the ability of the resume writer, you will need to see if they can take criticism. An easy way to do this is to see if they provide samples of previous resumes that were used. Often, the more of a critique a writer has given a resume, the more accurate the assessment will be. In addition, if the reviewer gives a sample of the same resume but different points of reference, this also suggests that the writer has a different sense of perspective from one point of view to another.Remember, the review resume writing services offered online will have a variety of opinions on the same resume. By focusing on the details, you can receive a much more detailed assessment that is based on your needs and the needs of your future employer.
